Inbound tourism in Japan - statistics & facts
With nearly 37 million travelers recorded, international tourism to Japan exploded in 2024, surpassing the previous high from 2019 by about five million visitors. This was a spectacular recovery from the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and a solid continuation of the upward trajectory of international travelers visiting Japan in the past decade.
Inbound tourism is the second-largest segment of Japan's sizable travel and tourism industry, behind the still dominant domestic overnight travel segment. The inbound segment accounted for nearly a quarter of Japan's tourism expenditure, surpassing the 20 percent mark for the first time in history, with a record contribution in 2024.鈥疶he travel and tourism sector, and by extension the inbound travel segment, impacts a broad spectrum of industry segments, including hotels, restaurants, transportation, and shopping, among many others, while also providing work for millions.
