In 2024, tourism expenditure by Chinese visitors to Japan amounted to around **** trillion Japanese yen. Chinese tourists comprised the largest share of tourism expenditure by international visitors. Most expenses came from travelers from countries and regions in relative proximity to the Japanese archipelago, including Taiwan, China, and South Korea. Â
What do tourists spend money on?
Tourism expenditure can be divided into several segments, which mainly include spending on accommodations, shopping, eating and drinking, transportation, and entertainment. Expenditure on accommodations accounted for the largest share of expenditure among visitors to Japan, followed by spending on shopping. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, expenditure on shopping was the leading segment.
Consumer preferences by region
Data shows that people from different countries or regions have different preferences concerning consumer spending in Japan. Tourists from China are the biggest spenders among international tourists, and they like to spend their money on shopping. International visitors from countries that are geographically farther away tend to spend more money per capita on entertainment and accommodation compared to visitors from neighboring countries and regions.
