Eating out in Japan - statistics & facts
There are plenty of mouths to feed and stomachs to fill in Japan, which is populated by more than 125 million people - many of whom, especially in urban areas, regularly visit restaurants. Japan is one of the few countries in the world that had (before the pandemic) more than one million operating restaurants or similar facilities. The industry segment of dining out (focusing on food services, not on drinks), is large, with its market size in metropolitan areas currently estimated at several trillion Japanese yen. Over the course of one year, more than one billion dinners are served at eateries in Japan's metropolitan regions.
