Traditional dairy remains a key agricultural industry and staple in most Australian households. While this remains the case, consumers nationwide are gradually embracing more plant-based dairy in their diet, from milk substitutes to cheese alternatives. Compared to dairy substitute consumption in countries worldwide, the share of Australians regularly consuming plant-based dairy is relatively high, at just over one-fifth. With a wider variety of alternatives hitting Australia’s supermarket shelves and available at food establishments, plant-based dairy, particularly in the milk and butter segments, is slowly challenging the retail sales dominance of traditional dairy.
