Plant-based food in South Korea - statistics & facts
Recently, sustainable consumption and interest in alternative, plant-based food options have emerged at the center of food trends in South Korea. Driven by health reasons, as well as environmental concerns and animal protection, members of the MZ (Millennials and Gen Z) generation were pushing toward vegetarian and vegan diet options and lifestyles, such as vegan beauty or fashion. Noticing the increase in the domestic vegan population, the restaurant scene has quickly picked up this trend, with a few hundred vegan restaurants currently operating in South Korea. Other establishments have also started offering non-animal-derived products, along with an increase in meat and dairy substitutes being found in supermarkets.
