Travel by car includes car, van and taxi. Parents were asked if children in the household attended primary or post-primary school, and responded to follow-up questions on the travel behavior of their children on their behalf.
In 2023, according to the Continuous Household Survey in Northern Ireland, the majority of primary school pupils traveled to school by car and the majority of post-primary school pupils traveled by bus. As pupils enter post-primary schools, the number of pupils who travel by walking or by car falls significantly, whereas the number of pupils who travel to school by bus increases ***. Bicycling is one of the least frequently used modes of transport among pupils in Northern Ireland.
