Induced abortion is defined as the medical termination of pregnancy. Equivalent terms include artificial abortion, therapeutic abortion, voluntary termination of pregnancy, elective termination of pregnancy and active termination of pregnancy.
In recent years, medical abortions have become more accessible in primary care settings (e.g., nurse practitioner and physician offices, community and public health clinics), and most of these are not included in the data tables.
Therefore, volumes reported underestimate the true number of induced abortions in Canada.
Detailed age breakdowns are not available from Newfoundland and Labrador and British Columbia non-hospital settings for patients younger than age 25. Data for the affected age categories is presented in the age group "unknown (≤24)" row. For the pan-Canadian Total reported row, this data is included in the "unknown" category.
