*The rush hour congestion index is calculated based on the comparison of travel times during peak hours to travel times during non-congested periods. Peak hours refer to 7:00-9:00 am and 17:00-19:00 pm on work days. The peak hours in Urumqi and Lhasa had been adjusted according to their time zones.
The monitored regions include the downtown areas of 100 cities and the downtown area is defined by public governmental data, geographical data from Baidu map and population activities data.
In 2023, the commuting peak congestion index of Chongqing was ***, which indicated that a trip that would have taken *** hour in light traffic required ****hours to complete on average. Chongqing's hilly topography and high population density put a strain on the cities traffic infrastructure.
