Healthy forests are a major contributor to people's livelihoods around the world. As of 2020, an estimated 880 million people directly derived fuelwood and charcoal from nearby forest areas. Dependency on forests was particularly high for those living in extreme poverty, with around 90 percent relying on forest resources for all or part of their livelihoods.
