In 2020, the total land area of coastal mangroves worldwide amounted to 147,359 square kilometers. Compared to the total global mangrove area in 1996, that was a decrease of more than 5,000 square kilometers.
Mangroves provide a variety of ecosystem services, including storing vast amounts of carbon, helping to stabilize shorelines, and preventing erosion.
