U.S. forest products industry - statistics & facts
The United States had the world鈥檚 fourth largest forested land area worldwide as of 2022. The total amount of land covered by planted and natural forests in the United States 鈥 as defined by the U.S. Forest Service 鈥 amounts to more than 765 million acres, plus 58 million additional acres of woodlands. Of the many U.S. states that participate in the nation鈥檚 forestry industry, Maine had the most prolific forest coverage as of 2022, with 17.6 million acres of its total 19.7 million acres of land forested, accounting for 89 percent of its land area. About two thirds of all U.S. forested land is timberland, producing or capable of producing industrially utilized wood. Most of this land is privately owned.
