In the fiscal year 2024, the annual proceeds from the Sports Promotion Lottery (toto and BIG lottery) amounted to approximately billion Japanese yen. Introduced in 2001, the Sports Promotion Lottery or 'toto' lottery in Japan is a lottery allowing sports betting on outcomes of Japan's professional soccer league (J. League) and foreign football matches. The goal of the lottery is the generation of funding through a portion of sales proceeds to subsidize sports-promotion projects of municipalities and sports organizations.
