In 2023, there were almost 4,000 estimated overdose deaths in the U.S. from heroin, around a quarter of which occurred among women. The incidence of heroin overdose deaths have decreased in the last decade, in contrast to deaths caused by fentanyl or cocaine, which have, on the contrary, increased to the most common drugs with death-inducing overdoses.
