About 3.1 million people used Twitter in the Netherlands in 2023, a decrease of over 460,000 users compared to the previous year. The online news service ranked among the lesser used social media platforms in the country, seeing the lowest user base since 2013. 26 percent of 20- to 39-year-olds said they used Twitter in 2018. Among respondents aged 18-21 years old, Twitter was used less often than Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.

App downloads peak at certain times

Despite the declining number of users, downloads of the Twitter app in the Netherlands do increase in particular months. In March 2019, for example, Twitter was downloaded approximately 17,000 times through the Apple App Store and roughly 24,000 times via the Google Play Store. No specific reason is given for this development.

Fake news?

A reason why Twitter is not very popular in the Netherlands might be because of trust issues. Survey results from 2018 mention that roughly 60 percent of survey participants said they considered Twitter to be an untrustworthy news source, whereas just three percent trusted the information they read there. Millennials shared in this distrust: 70 percent of them expressed some degree of distrust in the news they saw on this social media platform.
