This statistic shows the total number of bankruptcies of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Belgium from 2007 to 2020. As of 2020, insolvencies in Belgium reached a total of approximately *** thousand. Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels Capital Region offer different kinds of investment aids to assist Belgian or foreign businesses in the region. Many of these measures are aimed at starter businesses or self-employed. One example of this is the so-called Participation Fund (in Dutch: participatiefonds/in French: fonds de participation), a federal public institution offering different loans for both small and medium-sized companies and self-employed.
