In the observed period, the number of IKEA stores in Sweden grew to 22 permanent stores in 2025. As of 2024, the internationally known home furniture retailer from Sweden operated a total of 280 IKEA stores throughout the European continent and 480 stores all over the world. IKEA today is the world’s largest furniture retailer, recognized for its characteristic Scandinavian style. Most of IKEA's furniture is flat-pack, ready to be assembled by the consumer.

The number of employees of IKEA in Sweden increased together with the growing number of stores in recent years. In 2016, approximately 14,000 Swedes worked for IKEA. By comparison, the IKEA Group employed  216,000 people worldwide.Ìý

Leading retailers worldwide 

In 2021, the IKEA Group was among the 50 leading retailers around the world. Based on its revenue of roughly 45 billion U.S. dollars, it was in 25th position. Wal-Mart was the world’s largest retailer with revenues of about *** billion U.S. dollars.
