In 2020, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted travel and tourism, as countries worldwide put in place emergency measures and lockdowns to limit the spread of the virus. That year, roughly ** percent of all outbound holiday trips taken by Italians included stays at homes of friends and relatives, while they represented approximately ** percent of vacations abroad in 2019. Meanwhile, the share of outbound holidays with hotel stays declined from over ** percent in 2019 to around ** percent in 2020.
