In 2019, around 38.7 percent of characters in comedy films made in the United States were girls or women. Meanwhile, the share of female characters in action and/or adventure movies in the U.S. stood just below 28 percent that year. Furthermore, between 2018 and 2019, the number of lesbian characters in the highest-grossing movies in the U.S. decreased by 41 percent.
