In 2023, roughly *** exajoules of primary energy were obtained from renewable energy sources, making them the largest supplier of domestically produced energy in Germany.  Lignite followed as the second-largest contributor, providing around*** exajoules of primary energy. However, in the primary energy consumption mix, fossil fuels still account for the largest share.
