Provisional numbers for 2021 put the amount of sugar consumed in the European Union (EU-27) at approximately 16.6 million metric tons. By 2031, it is expected that the overall consumption of sugar in the EU will drop to around 15.9 million tons.
Production
Sugar is obtained from sugar cane or beet by removing molasses from raw sugar in a refining process. The result of this process is white sugar. Brown sugar is deliberately coated with molasses or has residual molasses. Worldwide production of sugar reached 181 million metric tons in 2021/22.
Consumption in comparison
The common market of the EU is the second largest sugar market in the world. In 2021/22, it surpassed the Chinese market by almost 1.5 million tons. However, it paled in comparison to the Indian market, where 29 million tons were consumed. That sames year, global consumption added up to 175.5 million metric tons.
