Global sugar production has increased since 2000, peaking in the marketing year 2017/18. In 2025/2026, approximately million metric tons of sugar were produced in total worldwide.Â
How have sugar prices changed in recent years?
Sugar prices have shown notable volatility in recent years, with a significant peak in 2023 when the global sugar price index approached 152 points. This surge was driven by weather-related production shortfalls, export restrictions in key producing countries, and rising demand for biofuels derived from sugar crops. Since then, prices have moderated, with the index declining and reaching lower levels by 2025 ( STATISTA ). By early 2026, sugar was among the agricultural commodities experiencing the most pronounced price decreases compared to 2018 levels.
Which countries are the leading producers?Â
Sugar production is geographically concentrated, with sugar cane and sugar beet cultivated in different climatic regions. Brazil and India dominate sugar cane production, with outputs of roughly 700–800 million and about 500 million metric tons respectively, supported by extensive infrastructure and policy frameworks. In contrast, sugar beet production is strongest in temperate regions, particularly in Russia and the United States.Â
