Total per capita meat and sausage product consumption in Germany amounted to ** kilos in 2023. Of these, boiled sausage had the largest share, with an annual consumption of around *** kilogramms per person. Other popular products included cured meats and raw sausage. 

Best-known food

German sausage production in particular is known all over the world, with different types of sausage popular depending on regions. Based on consumption at least several times a month, most recently the most in-demand products include pre-packed sausages from the refrigerator, as well as fresh sausage and meat from the counter. Picking a butcher or a meat counter is a task most consumers take seriously. The average producer price per kilo for raw sausage was over seven euros in 2020.

Pigs most slaughtered animal

In German households, most consumers ate meat products several times a week. A quarter did so almost daily. Globally, the animals that are most slaughtered for meat are pigs (which correlates to Germany’s sausage production), followed by sheep.
