White or red?
White wine is more popular in Germany, judging by retail sales volume figures during recent years. Germany is recognized internationally for its white wines in particular, the most famous example being Riesling. Besides this grape type, there are also other widely known ones such as Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, just to name a few. Production volume confirm the preference for white wine, with around double the volume of red wine.
Not the biggest drinkers
On a European scale, Germans are not among the first rushing to have a glass of wine. France led the ranking, followed by Italy and then Germany in third place. Which countries in Europe recorded the least wine consumed? Hungary and Austria were in a close race at the bottom.
