The coal type with the highest carbon factor is coke, which produces 251 pounds of carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) per million British thermal unit (Btu). Coke is used as a fuel, as well as a reducing agent in smelting iron ore in a blast furnace. The coal type with the second highest carbon content is Anthracite, at 229 pounds of COâ‚‚ per Btu. Anthracite, or hard coal, is the highest rank of coal and is primarily used for residential and commercial space heating. Coal has the highest carbon intensity of all fossil fuels when burned.
