Polish utility PGE has the highest installed coal power capacity of any major utility in Europe. As of July 2025, PGE's coal power plants had a combined capacity of more than ** gigawatts. This figure includes the lignite-fueled Bełchatów power station, which is the largest coal power plant and biggest polluter in the European Union. The coal plant is responsible for around ** million metric tons of CO2 released every year.
