In 2024, **** million Italian men and ** thousand women aged 45 to 54 years were smokers. This was the age group with the highest number of smokers, followed closely by the age group years. Overall, smoking was more common among males than females regardless of age.   

 Cigarette consumption

In 2024, **** percent of Italian smokers declared to consume on average six to ten cigarettes per day. Between 2010 to 2024, the share of individuals smoking ** to ** cigarettes per day decreased, while it increased the percentage of smokers stating to consume no more than *** cigarettes daily. During the same period, also the share of heavy smokers – people smoking more than ** cigarettes per day – decreased.  

E-cigarette

According to a survey conducted in 2023, around *** percent of Italians used e-cigarettes, an increase compared to the previous year. Most of them would consume nicotine e-cigarettes, with **** percent of users. Conversely, ** percent of them would use nicotine-free products.
