The aim of the reclassification is to improve the comparability of the different national markets, as the assortments sold by the retailers and market structures differ slightly to strongly.

Leading DIY retailers in Belgium 2022, by number of stores
In 2022, Belgium’s leading DIY retailer was Hubo, with *** stores countrywide. Brico was however closely followed by a second Belgian chain Brico, which had *** branches. Gamma, also one of the leading DIY retailer in neighboring country the Netherlands, was the largest player on the Belgian DIY market.Â
DIY retail floor space 
When looking at the retail floor space, Brico also ranks first in Belgium in 2022. Hubo had a slightly smaller retail space, amounting to roughly ** square meters. By comparison, Brico’s retail floor space in Belgium reached ** square meters that year. Â
DIY chain store density
Despite the presence of a number of large national and international DIY chains in the country, the majority of the DIY stores in Belgium did not belong to a chain. On the contrary: over three quarters of Belgian DIY retailers were independent stores. However, as the distribution of the shop floor area shows, these were often small stores.
