Since 2025, the Energy Institute has been using the Physical Energy Content method for calculating total energy supply (TES).
Energy from non-fossil fuel combustible electricity generation is measured based on input heat requirements, while non-combustible renewable sources are measured based on the energy content of their gross electricity output.
Figures refer to commercially traded fuels, including modern renewables used to generate electricity.
