* The respondent was the person in charge of managing the business’s finances. Data was collected via interview. Respondents were asked:"Which of the following do you feel describes your plans for the business over the next year?"
Respondents were then given four options:
- Grow substantially
- Grow moderately
- Stay the same size
- Become smaller
- Plan to sell/pass on/close
This statistic shows the share of those who responded with either 'grow substantially' or 'grow moderately'.
In order to qualify for interview, SMEs had to meet the following criteria in addition to the quotas by size, sector and region:
Not 50%+ owned by another company
Not run as a social enterprise or as a not for profit organisation
Turnover of less than £25m

The peak of this period was in second quarter 2014, when 61 percent of manufacturing sector SMEs stated that they planned to grow in the following 12 months. By the second quarter of 2019 it had decreased to 56 percent.
