Shell was founded through the merger of two rival companies from the Netherlands and from the United Kingdom. The main aim of this fusion was to compete with John D. Rockefellers’s Standard Oil Company. Today, Shell is a multinational corporation, headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands. The company is involved in every segment of the oil and gas industry – from exploration and production to trading and power generation. As of 2024, Shell's number of employees amounted to roughly 96,000.
