Citation formats

As of February 2026, Japan held United States Treasury securities totaling about 1.24 trillion U.S. dollars. It was followed by the UK, which held 897 billion U.S. dollars worth of securities. China was the third largest holder of Treasury securities at 693.3 billion U.S. dollars.

Treasury notes dominate the market

Treasury holdings differ not just in size but in form. Of the nearly 29 trillion U.S. dollars in marketable Treasuries that were outstanding as of June 2025, more than half were Treasury notes. These carry maturities of two, three, five, seven, or 10 years. Longer-dated Treasury bonds tend to be held by pension funds and insurers, which want steady, predictable returns to match long-term liabilities.

The rising price of U.S. debt

The United States is borrowing on a vast scale, and the cost to maintain it is rising. In 2025, public debt climbed to a record 37.64 trillion U.S. dollars. Interest payments by the federal government also hit a new high, rising well above one trillion U.S. dollars a year. The cost of interest now rivals some of the biggest items in the federal budget, including defense and Medicare, and accounted for about 13.8 percent of government spending.

For now, demand for U.S. treasuries remains strong, even as America’s debt and interest costs continue to rise.
