In 2001, the number of teams involved in the tournament increased from 64 to 65. This figure then increased again in 2011, going up to 68.Â
The 2020 edition of the tournament was canceled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Attendance in the 2021 tournament was limited as a result of the pandemic.
In 2025, around 708,000 fans watched the games of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament live in the arenas. Commonly known as March Madness, the tournament attracted an average audience of just under 20,000 spectators that year. Since 2000, the year with the highest total attendance was 2013, with around 800,000.
