Data are for community hospitals, which represent around 85% of all hospitals. Federal hospitals, long term care hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, institutions for the mentally retarded, and alcoholism and other chemical dependency hospitals are not included.Â
*Starting with the FY2017 AHA Annual Survey Database, AHA no longer employed its own methodology to classify hospitals as . As a result of this change, the number of hospitals in this edition (FY2017)of Hospital Statistics increased by approximately 700, with 400 of those being community hospitals.

In 2024, there were community hospitals (general acute care) in the United States. The largest portion of these hospitals were nonprofit, while only around ** percent were for-profit. There has been a steady decrease in the number of hospitals in the U.S. since 1975. While it is difficult to compare data from before 2017 due to methodology differences, the general trend is downwards, except for for-profit hospitals. There has been an increase in for-profit community hospitals in the last two decades.
