The number of single-family housing units that were authorized by building permits in the south of the United States decreased significantly between 2021 and 2024. Nevertheless, that was by far the region with most homes authorized, amounting to ** permits in 2024. The number of house construction permits in the west also fell in the past years. Despite some seasonal variation, the overall number of residential building permits in the U.S. was higher than a decade earlier.
