Figures refer to sent payment transactions. Ireland hosts the European headquarters of a large number of major fintech and payment companies, including PayPal, Stripe, and others. These firms are registered as e-money institutions with the Central Bank of Ireland, meaning their transaction volumes are reported under Irish non-MFI statistics even if the underlying customers are spread across Europe. This is a well-known quirk of Irish payments data: the figures can be significantly inflated by the passporting activity of Ireland-domiciled fintechs serving the wider EU market.

From 2020 to 2024, the number of transactions in Ireland grew steadily, with card payments and credit transfers being respectively the first and second most used methods of transfer. In 2024, the number of transfers surpassed 4.5 billion. Of this amount, over three billion were card payments, and 928.6 million were credit transfers. In 2023, card payments and credit payments were recorded at, respectively, 2.6 billion and 763.6 million times used.
