Underbanked households have an account at an insured institution, but have also obtained financial services and products from non-bank, alternative financial services (AFS) providers in the last 12 months. Households which used prepaid card in the previous 12 months.

The use of prepaid debit cards in the United States in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 can be categorized by household ethnicity. *** percent of the Hispanic family households in the United States used prepaid debit cards in 2019, whereas **** percent of black households did so in that same year. Over time, black households have seen the largest share in using prepaid debit cards. In particular 15 to 24 year-olds use a prepaid debit card.
