Megahubs are airports located in major economic areas where a large number of international airlines operate and that have an extensive network of air connections with other airports, as well as serving as an operational base for a major airline.



According to the source, the rankings are generated by comparing the number of scheduled connections to and from international flights with the number of destinations served from the airport. OAG analyzed flight data from the 100 largest airports by capacity and the 100 largest airports by international capacity and calculated the total number of all possible flight connections between incoming and outgoing flights within a six-hour window (where the incoming, outgoing, or both flights are international) on the busiest day for global aviation (August 2, 2022). Airports with fewer than 15 international destinations in August 2022 were excluded. As a result of the change in the ratio between the total number of possible connections and the number of international destinations served, there will be changes in the index values compared to 2019. The connectivity index used the business rules integrated within the OAG Connections Analyzer, and the following customizable criteria were chosen for all operational flights:
– Unique international connections only to/from the selected airports.
– Maximum circuit of 150.
– Minimum connection time (MCT) varies by airport. OAG has MCT information for every operational commercial airport.
– Maximum connection window of six hours.
The megahubs of the top 25 low-cost carriers (LCC) use the same methodology, but the restriction rule is limited only to low-cost flights.
