Although many prevention campaigns have been carried out in recent decades, the tendency of economically less developed countries to record more unwanted pregnancies remains a tangible fact. For example, the average annual rate of unwanted pregnancies in the poorest countries was 93 cases per 1,000 women, compared to only 34 in the countries with higher economic levels. However, these differences are not reflected in the same way in the abortion rate, which in the former rises to 38 per 1,000 women, compared to 15 per 1,000 in the economically more favored countries.
