Declining to 1.22 children per woman in 2024, the fertility rate in Japan was the second lowest among G7 nations. As the average age of mothers giving birth is shifting toward their thirties and women are having fewer children overall, Japan is struggling with a demographic imbalance of a decreasing young population and an increasing older one. As a consequence of these demographic changes, the Japanese economy is facing severe labor shortages and increased pressure on the social security system.
