The data represent minimal estimates of the actual number of lives lost during migration. Only individuals who died during their journey from their country of residence to another country are recorded. The number of deaths recorded on migration routes between 2014 and September 18, 2024, varied greatly depending on the region crossed. The Mediterranean was the deadliest migration route in the world. During this period, more than 30,000 people lost their lives or went missing in this region. The Missing Migrants Project specifies that these are low estimates. The toll of deceased and missing migrants may be higher than the figures presented.
