By "built-up urban area," the report refers to "a continuously built development that, by definition, excludes rural lands." It corresponds to "the city in its physical form, as opposed to metropolitan areas, which are economic or functional cities (employment and housing centers)." For Paris, for example, the study takes into account the "urban unit" as defined by Insee, namely a perimeter of 2,853 km² encompassing 411 municipalities (which is a small part of the metropolitan area representing 1,929 municipalities and 18,941 km²).
In the listed cities, French is the official language or the language spoken and understood by the majority of residents. The figures indicated correspond to the estimated number of inhabitants and not the number of French speakers.
