Evolution of the Earth Overshoot Day worldwide 1970-2021
This chart shows the evolution of the remaining time in the year after Earth Overshoot Day from 1970 to 2021. Earth Overshoot Day is the date from which it is estimated that humanity's annual consumption of ecological resources exceeds the Earth's biocapacity limits. In 1970, humanity's consumption was almost balanced with Earth's resources, with Overshoot Day occurring at the very end of December. Since then, Overshoot Day has been occurring earlier and earlier in the year. In 2018, it even took place as early as July. The partial halt of human activities caused by the 2020 health restrictions allowed this critical date to be pushed back to August 22, thus leaving "more" than percent of the year for humanity to live on credit. But in 2021, the curve rose sharply again.
