In the third quarter of 2023, women represented **** percent of the economically active population in Mexico. The total number of working women across the country was about **** million, while men were around **** million. It is worth noting that the role of women in the Mexican labor market is significantly low, considering that approximately **** percent of Mexicans are women.Â
Women and Economic Participation
Within the sectoral distribution, women occupy **** percent of the tertiary sector in Mexico. The primary and secondary sectors have a significant male dominance, as in both cases more than ** percent of the workforce is male. Therefore, it is not surprising that the female economic participation is lower in states focused on agriculture (such as Chiapas), while in states oriented toward the tertiary sector, such as Colima, female participation exceeds ** percent.
Income and Other Issues for Women in the Labor Market
The income gap between men and women in Mexico is wide. Men earn on average approximately Mexican pesos, while their female counterparts earn pesos. That is, men receive approximately ** percent more income than women. However, this is by no means the only problem affecting women, as one of the main challenges to overcome is informality, which notably affects the Adam’s rib. The informality rate in the Aztec country in the third quarter of 2023 was **** percentage points higher for females than for males.
