On March 14, 2020, a state of emergency was declared in Spain due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the extent it was beginning to have in the country at that time. As a result, road travel was reduced to a minimum, being allowed only in justified cases. Despite this, fatalities continued to be recorded on national interurban roads across all age groups, although the most affected were individuals aged 45 to 54. Specifically, nearly ** percent of the people who lost their lives on Spanish roads between March 15 and May 6 of that year belonged to this group. Meanwhile, only * percent of those who died in traffic accidents were under 15 years old.
