On March 17, 2025, the plane of the Honduran airline Lanhsa Airlines crashed into the Caribbean Sea shortly after takeoff. The aircraft was carrying 17 people, of whom 12 died, including the Honduran musician Aurelio Martínez. However, this is by no means the worst air accident in the Central American country, nor in Latin America and the Caribbean. That position is held by the one that occurred 18 years ago in Brazil. Specifically, on July 17, 2007, the plane of the airline TAM Brasil (then TAM Linhas Aéreas), departing from Porto Alegre to São Paulo, failed to brake when attempting to land and ended up colliding with the TAM Express building and a gas station. A total of 187 people died.
