**The waste collections took place along various coastlines, rivers, or lakes in Europe: Bay of Biscay, Iberian coasts, English Channel or North Sea, Baltic Sea, Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, Adriatic Sea, Black Sea.

*This list of waste is based on the master list of the European harmonized protocol and on the most commonly found waste on European beaches. 622 organizers accompanied by 19,827 people participated in this exercise. The total amount of waste collected during these operations is 1,054,852 items for a total volume of 313.641 cubic meters.

Citation formats

A little less than half of the items collected during waste pickups organized by Surfrider Foundation Europe were tobacco-related waste such as cigarette butts or cigarette packs. Among all the waste collected on European coasts or rivers, food packaging and containers are also largely found. Among the waste collected on European beaches in 2021, 242,376 cigarette butts were found.
