The NGO Surfriders Foundation Europe organized several hundred waste collection events on the beaches of various European maritime coasts. In total, nearly 540,000 pieces of waste were collected in 2021. Cigarette butts were the main type of waste found on beaches in Europe in 2021, with more than 242,000 butts collected. The other main types of waste found were fragments of plastic and polystyrene. Bottles also made up a portion of the waste, with 12,802 bottles larger than 0.5 L collected, as well as nearly 20,000 caps.
