The cities in the department of Réunion were the most affected by poverty in France in 2017. That year, nearly half of the population in the cities of Saint-Benoît, Saint-Louis, Saint-André, Saint Joseph, and Le Port lived below the poverty threshold set at 60 percent of the median income. The cities of Seine-Saint-Denis are also heavily affected by precariousness and low incomes. Among this ranking of the 20 cities with the highest poverty rates, seven are located in this department of the inner suburbs.
