HIV/AIDS worldwide - Statistics & Facts
HIV/AIDS is one of the worst pandemics in human history, with cumulative deaths from the disease estimated to be between 27 and 48 million. Although the global incidence rate has decreased significantly over the past few decades and treatment has vastly improved, HIV/AIDS still accounts for hundreds of thousands of deaths per year and remains an especially significant problem in many low-income countries. In 2021, HIV/AIDS was the tenth leading cause of death in low-income countries, with these countries often lacking the resources and health care systems for adequate prevention and treatment. As of 2024, around 40.8 million people worldwide were living with HIV.
