Natural gas production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico has markedly declined over the past two decades. In May 2025, offshore marketed natural gas production amounted to ****Â billion cubic meters, a decrease of around ** percent compared to the same month in the year 2000. Reasons for such a fall in production output are largely concentrated around high capital and operation costs and the advent of unconventional production techniques.
